The New Jersey Department of Transportation issued local aid grants totaling $3 million on January 27 to help 13 municipalities initiate transit and bicycle infrastructure projects that aim to offer quality of life improvements for New Jersey residents without burdening local property tax payers.
“We do much more than just maintain roads and bridges,” said NJDOT Commissioner Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti in a statement.
The three state DOT programs providing this local aid – the Bikeway Grant program, the Safe Streets to Transit initiative, and the Transit Villages grant program – each provide $1 million in grants funded through the State Transportation Trust Fund.
“In a state as densely populated as New Jersey, it is important that we encourage the use of alternate forms of transportation, such as biking or public transportation,” added Governor Phil Murphy (D). “These grants support biking, walking, and mass transit programs designed to help drive better health and environmental outcomes that make New Jersey a more livable state.”
